Hack Dance Post Jam Update
We've read all the comments about the game, and we were thrilled to see the enthusiasm and interest in our game!
Your feedback helped us evaluate and consider major updates to the game aesthetics and usability!
Look Change
In this update, we tried to merge the dancer action with the note-pressing mechanic. Now the dancer taps the notes with its moves. Another change we made was to the UI. Part of the original game UI was already 3D, such as the victory and game over scenes, which allowed us to add glow and light to the texts, as if holograms. We standardized the UI to have a consistent, worldspace, 3D look. This came with a bonus feature that allowed us to add particle effects to the notes, which now leave trails and shine.

UX revision
Menu-wise, we revised the levels UX and UI structure: separating the play game from the level selection so that when a player presses play, they go straight to the next unlocked level; on the level selection menu, levels are shown in conquered, unlocked, and locked states, and you can also reset the game to have all levels locked and the tutorial unlocked. Additionally, we added a pause menu, which allows the player to pause, quit, or restart the level. On the pause menu and the main menu, the player will also find the settings menu, where they can edit the overall volume, or the music and SFXs volume separately.
Responsiveness
Previously, it was hard to know if you had hit a note or not. In this update, the note hit spawns particles, plays a success or failure sound, and, if the reader is careful to notice, changes the dancer's facial expression. Pressing any key plays a pressing sound, nevertheless. The dancer animations are more responsive to the player's inputs, and to top it all, the dancing speed of the dancer increases with the level, to accompany the note spawning. We hope these changes help the game feel more engaging to the players.
What's to come?
We don't know. This jam was a great opportunity to learn new skills and to test our creativity. We think the jam ran its course, and we are aiming for new projects. Some things that we are still not satisfied with are: the lack of penalisation for missing the right input, and the difficulty playing the diagonals. Who knows, another update might come.
